Astronomy 221: Observing The Night Sky


Course Outline


The night sky: Astronomicaltelescopes and observing procedures, coordinate systems and celestialmotions, types and physical nature of astronomical objects

Using THE SKY computer planetarium program: Names and appearance of important objects, constellation forms

Using a small telescope: Set up and operate a computerized telescope, observe examples of interesting objects

 

Typical Organization

Lectures: TBA at start of term, 4-5 total

Observatory sessions, self scheduled as weather permits

Lab reports (100%) two major exercises
